MLB news: St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, New York Mets

Let’s take a look at some of the latest MLB news and notes, including injuries impacting the New York Mets and Yankees, as well as a troubling trend for the St. Louis Cardinals.

St. Louis Cardinals news: Another not-so-great start

If you’re the St. Louis Cardinals, you’re starting to see a pattern when it comes to the opening of the game … and it’s not a good one.

As Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch pointed out on Twitter, Cardinals starting pitchers have allowed an extra-base hit to the first batter of the contest for four straight games. Ketel Marte’s triple on Tuesday night against Jordan Montgomery continued the trend.

At least one thing changed for the Cardinals on Tuesday night. Marte was thrown out at the plate trying to score, becoming the first of those four extra-base hitters to not score and put the Cardinals behind quickly.

New York Yankees news: Giancarlo Stanton’s injury timeline

It seems that the hamstring injury suffered by Stanton while legging out a double in Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Twins will cost the Yankees slugger a significant amount of time.

Moving Stanton to the injured list marks the seventh time in his five seasons with the Yankees that he has landed on the IL.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone is projecting that Stanton will miss six weeks of action with the injury, putting a timeline for his return at late May or early June.

MLB news: New York Mets suffer another injury in the rotation

Speaking of injuries in the Big Apple, the New York Mets placed Carlos Carrasco on the injured list with elbow inflammation. The stint on the 15-day IL marks the third consecutive season that Carrasco will miss time on the mound for the Mets.

According to Mets manager Buck Showalter, Carrasco will be leaving the team during its visit to Los Angeles to return to New York for imaging on his right elbow. It’s unclear the extent of the injury, as well as exactly how long Carrasco might be out of the rotation, which is now missing Carrasco, Justin Verlander (upper back), and Jose Quintana (ribs).
